Washburn Center for Children

Nominated by Braun Intertec

As a community mental health center with more than half of its clients coming from low income families, Washburn Center for Children is a critical safety net for the community – no child or family is turned away for financial reasons. Washburn Center for Children had outgrown their prior facility due to fast growing demand for their services, and therefore built the new facility out of necessity. The 55,000 square foot facility is designed to not only support children and families receiving care but also the therapists and staff delivering that care. The larger facility provides the capacity to serve more families and better meet the mental health needs of the children in our community. This facility offers a healthy, sustainable and therapeutic environment to support children’s healing. The project incorporated the latest research showing how a healing environment can enhance the healthy development of a child, by providing a place to heal and grow. To help create this one-of-a-kind space, nationally renowned author Richard Louv consulted on the design of the facility to incorporate natural elements into the therapeutic space. Core design elements create an aesthetic environment that helps reduce stress and anxiety, increase patient satisfaction, and promote health and healing through natural daylight, plants and green space, and use of natural materials. The building is LEED certified to ensure efficient energy operation and to create a healthy building for staff and children.
