Mac Hyde Brownfield Leadership Award
Maclay “Mac” Hyde (1934-2013) was a pioneering environmental law attorney, a real estate developer of polluted, often abandoned brownfield sites, and an early supporter of Minnesota Brownfields. He was an inspiration and a mentor to many in the field of brownfield redevelopment and environmental law. We are pleased to honor his legacy through a competitive individual merit award for individuals involved in brownfield redevelopment. Testimonials below should provide insight for nomination criteria.
“Mac was a remarkable person; I’m privileged to have known him. In the brownfield arena, he won over people with his intelligent and helpful, yet quiet demeanor.
His accomplishments are unparalleled, first as a highly successful environmental litigation attorney and later as the first highly successful redeveloper of Superfund sites and other extensively contaminated land.
Mac was a hardworking, insightful leader and an inspiration to us all.” — Jerry Stahnke, MPCA
“This award is a fitting tribute to Mac who led the way pioneering brownfield redevelopment in Minnesota. Mac applied his deep knowledge of real estate, administrative, and environmental law at the most challenging polluted sites in the Twin Cities.
He immersed himself in the details, working with dogged persistence politely convincing sometimes wary regulators, policymakers, developers, lenders, neighbors, and the public that contaminated property could be successfully converted to new productive uses.
Everyone associated with Minnesota Brownfields has benefited from Mac’s efforts. His legacy is exemplified in the fine programming of Minnesota Brownfields, and at the many sites that he touched throughout the Twin Cities where once blighted neighborhoods are now thriving with vibrant, mixed use development.” — Joe Maternowski, Hessian & McKasy
