Rayette Lofts

Nominated by Anderson Companies

Rayette Lofts renovated an asbestos- and lead-contaminated, boarded-up, barred-windowed, parking garage into 88 market-rate apartments with a new restaurant and its original historic character restored and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Renovation removed the ramps and creatively used the opening to insert elevators, a stairwell, and mechanical shafts. The industrial character of the building was retained in the apartments and common areas with exposed brick walls and concrete columns and ceilings. The newly revitalized Rayette building also epitomizes the energy pulsing through the historic Lowertown District now. Neighbor to the St. Paul Farmers Market, the new CHS Field, Mears Park, the Union Depot and the Green Line, it takes its place in one of the top up-and-coming neighborhoods in the nation. Rayette Lofts also brings millennials, young marrieds, and higher wage earners to the Lowertown area. These new residents will be shopping, living, eating, entertaining in Lowertown and the surrounding St. Paul area as well as commuting along the Green light rail line.
