A Mill Artist Lofts
Project Location: 315 Main Street SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414
Nominated by: Braun lntertec Corporation in collaboration with Dominium Development & Acquisition, LLF and Weis Builders, Inc.
Rising above the century-old cobblestones of Saint Anthony Main Street is the historic Pillsbury A-Mill; an impressive reminder of Minneapolis’s origins as the “Mill City”. A unique vision emerged to revitalize the defunct and vacant mill into 251 affordable artist apartments, with public spaces where resident artists can display their work.
Significant restoration and remediation was required to bring new life to the site. The historically designated structures required renovation and restoration approaches to preserve the historic integrity of key architectural elements and features. In addition to the original stone foundation and exterior, the interior design incorporated much of the mill’s internal operations equipment such as chutes, pulleys, and lifts, to create a look that is bold and modern, but also tells the story of the building’s past. The LEED gold certified project incorporates many sustainable and energy efficient features throughout the complex. In addition, the A-Mill’s hydroelectric generator provides electricity for over 70% of the entire complex’s power needs.
The adaptive reuse of this vacant mill and warehouse into viable residential living spaces adds to the socio-economic viability of the neighborhood with shops, restaurants and cafes flourishing nearby. The artistic energy created by the historic A-Mill honors the neighborhood’s history while adding a new chapter for this vibrant riverfront community.
