Chaska Firemen’s Park Redevelopment
Project Location: 1661 Park Ridge Drive, Chaska MN 55318
Nominated by: Bay West, LLC

The City of Chaska developed plans to transform the 12 acre site of the former Chaska Brick brickyards starting in the early 2000s.  When an early redevelopment plan dissolved in 2008, the city took advantage of the situation by engaging the community in a year-long, in-depth planning process.  The community arrived at a new plan for a much larger and more impactful project that included a Firemen’s Memorial, a brickyard history walk, a 300-seat event center, a community welcome hall, a privately run “Ale House” restaurant, a curling center, and 2 major park renovations.

In addition to its long historical use as part of the famous Chaska Brick manufacturing legacy, the project site had previously been used for truck body manufacturing, as a gasoline service station, an auto repair shop, and a garden center.  The brick kilns and drying racks that had been constructed on the property prior to 1910 had been buried on the property, and known petroleum releases from underground storage tanks were identified.

The Chaska Firemen’s Park Redevelopment project energized the Chaska community by creating a vibrant, multi-purpose community space for thousands and residents and visitors to gather each day and night of the week.  The redevelopment helps to firmly establish the downtown as a destination attraction in the region.  Today, the return on investment that the city has made in reimagining and redeveloping this site is clearly evident in the number of families who take daily advantage of the new amenities and the number of businesses and community groups from across the metropolitan area who visit to enjoy everything the City of Chaska has to offer.
